What is a Legal Document Assistant?
A legal document assistant (LDA) is an experienced professional authorized under California law to prepare legal documents for consumers at the direction of the client. LDAs assist the “self-help” client with simple legal matters.
An LDA is not an attorney and cannot provide legal advice or represent individuals in court.
LDAs have the same educational requirements and background as paralegals. LDAs are mandated by law to be registered and bonded, prior to offering legal document preparation services to the public.
A paralegal is employed by an attorney. A paralegal cannot provide services to the consumer unless attorney supervised. Paralegals are prohibited from independently providing legal document preparation services to the public.
Since even the best legal self-helf books can be confusing and overwhelming, your LDA can provide invaluable assistance with routine legal taks, such as typing and filing the paperwork for uncontested divorces, wills, trusts and many types of legal documents.
